For The New Black Woman Fall & Winter Skin Care - Brief Article
Protecting Your Skin Against The Changing Seasons
YOU no longer see strappy sandals and back-bearing tops. The fans drop in price while the cost for heaters soars. If you miss those signs that the season is changing, don't worry--your skin will tell you. When summer ends, your skin goes through some serious drama. That healthy glow from days in the sun may vanish. Cold wind and dry fall air can leave your skin a scaly, itchy mess.
But you don't have to give in to the dryness. Experts say following a regular ritual can restore the lively look of warmer days. With proper rest, diet, exercise and moisturizing, you can love your skin in fall or any season.
Stay Moisturized
The single most important tool for keeping your skin supple is a daily dose of moisture. A light lotion may do the job in the summer. But fall and winter mean it's time to bring out the big guns.
"As it gets colder, the air gets drier and the skin gets drier," says Dr. Lynn McKinley-Grant, associate clinical professor of dermatology of Washington Hospital Center and George Washington University. "You have to change and use a heavier moisturizer to avoid the winter itch."
Don't let the variety of products overwhelm you. Moisturizers can range in price from a couple bucks to hundreds of dollars. But it's best to stay simple. Ignore the designer labels and impressive-sounding names, and find the one that works for you. It may be as simple as using all old remedy such as petroleum jelly.
"I'm a big fan of Vaseline because it doesn't have preservatives in it," says the dermatologist. "But no matter what people choose, they should make sure they aren't allergic to the product [which will] do their skin more harm than good."
You may need to use different moisturizers on your face and body. You can have oily skin in some places and face dryness in others.
If your face is oily, for example, you may want to use a water-based moisturizer instead of the heavy cream you may use on your legs and arms.
When bathing, it's good to remember that long, steamy showers may feel good, but they can add to your dryness. In the fall, it's best to switch to lukewarm water and cut your shower time. Dr. McKinley-Grant says to keep skin its best, shower just once a day. You should also choose your soap carefully.
"You want to be more conscious of using creamy soaps, and stay away from drying soaps such as deodorant-based products," she advises.
Chicago professional Keri Hinderlie says in addition to her skin, her hair and nails get drier in the fall. "In the summer, my nails grow and I don't have to pay attention to them," says the 26-year-old development officer for Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital in Chicago. "In the winter, I use a cuticle oil and put a new coat of clear on every day so that my nails stay strong."
Like Hinderlie, people should remember to give their nails and tresses some extra pampering in the fall. Use a conditioner each time you shampoo to keep your hair in top shape. A cuticle oil and gelatin can make your nails supple and strong.
Beware The Sun
Many people remember that cold air can harm their skin. But they forget to safeguard against the sun. Damage from UV rays is a risk year-round, particularly for people who enjoy outdoor activities like skiing and sledding. Sun exposure can dry your skin, chap your lips and harm your eyes. It gets even worse at high altitudes, where snow and ice can reflect and magnify the sun's rays. Prolonged sun can kill your skin cells and make skin flaky and dry.
"We all need some kind of sun protection," says Dr. Jan Adams, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in Beverly Hills, Calif. "The literature tries to make you think if you have dark skin it's a coat of armor, but the most damaging effects to the skin aren't aging, it's sun damage. It affects us like everyone else."
To protect yourself against the harmful rays of the sun, wear a moisturizing sunscreen with at least SPF 15 when you're going to be outside for long periods of time. Wear goggles or sunglasses when going skiing and rub a balm on your lips every day to protect against chapping.
Eat Right
A balanced diet is crucial to maintaining healthy skin any time of year. Drink lots of water and remember to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. When weather dips in temperature, warm drinks soothe but may also make you feel dehydrated. Caffeine-filled beverages and alcohol can dry out your skin. There's no evidence that chocolate or greasy foods cause blemishes. But keep your hands clean to avoid transferring the oil to your face.Shampoos, Invacre, Boday wash, Medicated Shampoo, Medicated Gel, No Rinse Shampoo, Rinse Free Body wash.
Keep fit
Exercise not only makes your body look good, but it also helps your skin. The more you work out and sweat, the more toxins are removed. "Sweating is very healthy," says McKinley-Grant. "It gets rid of a lot of waste products. Exercise keeps skin toned so the skin doesn't sag as much."
Working out regularly also increases circulation and revives your skin, making it healthy and bright.
Pampering Your Face
It's important to maintain good cleansing habits during any time of the year. But here are a few tips to follow during the colder months:
* USE A GENTLE CLEANSER. You want something that does the job but doesn't strip the skin of all its moisture. If your skin is normal, you may want to use a creamy cleanser instead of a foaming one that can dehydrate. For oily of acne-prone skin, use water-based cleansers and consult a dermatologist.
* TRY A MILDER TONER. People with oily skin often use toners to remove excess greased and to minimize shine. But you can find an astringent that works without overdrying. Look at the ingredients. Witch hazel, experts say, is a good substitute for harsh products like alcohol.
* DO PROTECT YOUR FACE FROM THE ELEMENTS, EVEN IF YOU SKIN IS OILY. Use a lotion, cream or moisturizing sunscreen to keep you face wrinkle-free and bright.
