About Overactive Bladder

Do you often experience a strong, sudden urge to urinate with hardly any time to make it to the bathroom?

If you answered yes, you may have Overactive Bladder. So speak to your doctor today because it could be treated effectively.

Overactive Bladder is the loss of bladder control and the inability to control urination. It's a common medical condition that affects more than 34 million Americans, including 1 in 5 adults over the age of 40, and nearly twice as many women as men.

Overactive Bladder is not caused by bladder infections, although some of the symptoms may be similar. It's not because you drink too much fluid, or have a weak bladder. And, while the likelihood of developing Overactive Bladder does increase with age, Overactive Bladder is NOT a natural part of aging. It's a real medical condition—you can do something about it.

How your bladder works.

When your bladder is full, your brain signals the muscle in the bladder to contract, or squeeze, and push the urine out through a tube called the urethra. Usually, these contractions are voluntary (or, under your control), but, when the muscle in your bladder receives sudden, involuntary signals to contract before you are ready to urinate, it's called Overactive Bladder (OAB).

A number of conditions and disorders can contribute to the development of Overactive Bladder and/or the loss of bladder control:

Chronic illness. Conditions like Parkinson's disease, stroke, multiple sclerosis, or diabetes may have an effect on the bladder and associated nerves.

Surgery. Prostate or other pelvic surgeries can weaken muscles or damage nerves, making it difficult to contract the bladder, causing involuntary contractions.

Age. Aging itself does not cause Overactive Bladder. Overactive Bladder is a treatable medical condition. But as we age, other conditions that affect Overactive Bladder may occur.

Smoking

Obesity

Taking medications such as sedatives or narcotics

Taking diuretics

Which of the following symptoms match yours?

Urinary Incontinence occurs when the bladder suddenly contracts without your control, resulting in sudden leaks or wetting accidents.

Urge Incontinence occurs when the bladder suddenly contracts without your control, resulting in a strong need to go to the bathroom right away.

Urinary Frequency occurs when a person needs to make 8 or more trips to a bathroom in a 24-hour period.

Talk to your doctor about these symptoms.
