Description:

Rollator

The tripod gait is used by patients with more severe disabilities. The crutches may be advanced together or one at a time; then the legs are lifted or dragged forward. The "drag-to" pattern is slow and tiring, but stable. Many patients who use the tripod gait progress to a "-to or gait pattern, in which the crutches are advanced simultaneously and the body is lifted and swung. This involves marked oscillations in the center of mass and a high energy expenditure. To ensure a large base of support, the feet should come to rest behind or ahead of the crutches, not between them.

When using a walker, the patient lifts (or rolls) the walker forward, then steps up to it with each foot in turn. Patients should be cautioned not to step too far forward or they may fall backward when they attempt to lift the walker.

A therapist training a patient to use an ambulation aid should include drills on carpet and rough ground, on inclines and stairs. The patient should also be taught how to circumvent obstacles (e.g., doors) and how to use the aid while transferring (e.g., to and from a chair, a toilet, a tub and a car). Medical Supply
