Description:
WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS More than 340,000 people die each year from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). Less than 5 percent of people who face SCA survive, largely because the victims are not treated with the right medical equipment in time. Defibrillators treat the most common SCA cause, a condition called ventricular fibrillation, in which the heart's electrical activity becomes disorganized and the heart pumps little or no blood. The defibrillator's electric shock aims to reorganize that activity and restart the heart. For every minute that goes by without defibrillation, a cardiac arrest victim's chances of survival decrease by about 10 percent, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Yet the average response time for emergency medical services in a typical community is nine minutes. That can be a particular issue in northern Idaho and eastern Washington and Oregon, Avista Utilities' service territory. To address the problem, the company equipped all its service vehicles and office locations across its 30,000-square-mile territory with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) so that it can help its employees (should they have a heart attack while they are on the road), as well as the public. (Utility workers, like anyone else, are protected from liability by "good Samaritan" laws-if they are in the right place at the right time with their AED, they can be, in a sense, another kind of emergency medical service.)
